NASCAR driver Brian Vickers was being treated Thursday for an undisclosed medical condition that will prevent him from racing this weekend at Dover International Speedway.
Red Bull Racing said Vickers, 26, was hospitalized Wednesday night and being held for further testing. The team did not reveal where he was hospitalized.
Red Bull said Casey Mears will replace Vickers, who is 20th in the Sprint Cup standings, this weekend in the No. 83 Toyota.
Baffert sees hope in Preakness
Lookin at Lucky has been anything but lucky in his last three races, including a disappointing sixth-place finish as the Kentucky Derby favorite.
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert hopes things may be looking up for his colt at Saturdays’ Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Not only does Lookin at Lucky have a better draw at the No. 7 spot after going out at the No. 1 post in the Derby, but he will also have a new jockey in Martin Garcia, who replaces veteran Garrett Gomez.
“Everywhere I send him, he wins for me,” Baffert said of Garcia. “He’s a kid who’s progressed quickly. He’s got raw talent.”
Federer, Nadal win in Madrid
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal reached the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters on Thursday with straight-set victories.
The top-ranked Federer beat Swiss countryman Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 6-1 and second-ranked Nadal topped John Isner of the United States 7-5, 6-4.
•Serena and Venus Williams are going to be back at the top of the rankings together for the first time in seven years. The WTA Tour says that Venus Williams is assured of moving up to No. 2 on Monday, one spot behind younger sister Serena.
Mavericks complete trades
Missouri Mavericks coach Scott Hillman announced Thursday that the team has completed all of the trades from the 2009-10 season.
The Mavericks, which are in the Central Hockey League, acquired defensemen Matt Hanson and Andrew Winnik from the Arizona Sundogs and defenseman Jim Henkemeyer from the Tulsa Oilers. The Mavericks have also dealt forward Jeff MacDermid to the Wichita Thunder to complete a deal for Andrew Davis.
Youth coach accused of fixing
A former church-league basketball coach tried to bribe referees to rig games in his favor, Pennsylvania state police said in charges filed Thursday.
Michael Kman, 45, of the Harrisburg suburb of Enola, sent a series of anonymous calls and text messages to the officials last year to get them to help the Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church boys basketball team, police said in a complaint.
The arrest affidavit said Kman offered the referees, who are brothers, $2,500 to fix two games and promised more if they showed they could be trusted with lower-level games.
