A search has begun for 16 year old sailor Abby Sunderland, the sister of Zac Sunderland (pictured), after she lost contact with her family while trying to become the youngest to solo circumnavigate the globe
Abby Sunderland, the 16 year old sailing around the world by herself is in trouble in the Indian Ocean. One of her emergency beacons began sending a signal. There is a large international effort to find and rescue Abby Sundersnad.
Her beacons were turned on deliberately which is why her family and team believe that the teen is still alive. That is good news for Abby Sunderland and her family.
Sunderland’s location is more than 2,000 miles form Africa and Australia. There are flights searching for her vessel, and it will likely take ships at least a day to reach the area she is located in.
The emergency beacons are still together and are drifting at 1 mph. The beacons could either be on the boat or a raft. Whatever has happened, Sunderland has not been able to use her satellite phone.
Sunderland last spoke with her family at 4 am PDT Thursday morning. She was in rough conditions and had an engine problem. She did get the engine to start. When she hung up to check on other things on the boat, she never called back. An hour later the emergency beacons were reported activated.
The family does not believe the boat has sunk because another beacon would automatically go off at 15 feet. She set sail on January 23, 2010 to attempt to become the youngest person to ever sail around the world without stopping. He brother was the youngest person in 2009, but has since lost the record.
Typically a person who is lost at sea can survive 12 days without fresh water and a month with no food. However, if she is in the water, it all depends on conditions, gear and water temperature.
I desperately hope she is found alive and well. I cannot imagine how her parents let her do this. She has been gone since late January and that seems insane. She is only 16. I do not know how anybody thought this was a good idea. She is alone!
