Belmont Park Watches Upset as Drosselmeyer wins Belmont Stakes

Bookmark and Share

2010 was one of those years when not only did we not get a Triple Crown winner in horse racing, we didn't even see a repeat winner in any of the races. The Belmont Stakes saw an upset on Saturday, as Drosselmeyer ran to an upset victory in the 142nd running of the race.

Drosselmeyer, running at 13-1 defeated Fly Down by three-quarters of a length in front of 45,243 at Belmont Park. Meanwhile, Preakness runner-up First Dude was third after setting the pace for most of the 1 1/2 mile race.

Attendance at Belmont Park was announced at 45,243, as noted above, which was down from 52,861 in 2009. Showing just what the potential of a Triple Crown can do for the Belmont Stakes, there were 94,476 in Belmont Park in 2008, when Big Brown was running for the Triple Crown (but failed).

Jockey Mike Smith rodes Drosselmeyer. Trainer Bill Mott was given his first win in a Triple Crown race. At the same time, the win gives WinStar Farm its second win of the Triple Crown season. They also bred and own Super Saver, who won the Kentucky Derby on May 1, on a sloppy, rainy day. Neither Super Saver nor Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky ran in the final leg of the Triple Crown.

Bill Mott was the youngest trainer inducted into racing’s Hall of Fame when, in 1998, he was inducted at the age of 45. Before today's run at Belmont Park, he was 0 for 13 in Triple Crown races.

In terms of betting, Drosselmeyer returned $28.00, $11.60 and $7.70. Fly Down, with John Velazquez riding, paid $6.80 and $5.10. First Dude returned $4.90 to show.
