The Red Sox scratched right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka from Saturday's start with a forearm strain and placed him on the 15-day disabled list.
Atchison made his first major league start in place of Matsuzaka. Dustin Richardson was recalled from Class AAA Pawtucket to take Matsuzaka's roster spot.
Nava, a Switch-hitter batting left-handed and starting in left field, became the first Red Sox player to hit a grand slam in his first Red Sox plate appearance since Rip Rapulski in 1960.
In the following inning, Nava again came to the plate with the bases loaded but could not check his swing and struck out. Marco Scutaro followed with a two-run single to give Boston a 7-2 lead.
Nava also doubled in the fifth inning. Manny Delcarmen took over on the mound to start the fourth inning with the Red Sox leading 8-2.
