Drew Peterson Trial Delayed

Bookmark and Share

A Will County judge on Wednesday delayed the murder trial of former Bolingbrook police Sgt. Drew Peterson until July after Peterson's defense team said they needed more time to prepare.

Judge Stephen White pushed back jury selection to July 8, more than three weeks later than the scheduled June 14 start date.

Peterson's lead attorney, Joel Brodsky, asked that the trial be delayed until Aug. 23 to give the defense team — which recently lost two attorneys and added three others — more time to prepare. He said White's ruling may be grounds for appeal if Peterson is convicted.
The trial is expected to last up to three weeks, said Joseph Lopez, one of the new defense attorneys.

Peterson has pleaded not guilty and is being held on $20 million bail in the drowning death of ex-wife Kathleen Savio.

He is also the sole suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy, but has not been charged and has denied any involvement.
