Who Won American Idol Tonight

'American Idol' Winner 2010 Is Lee DeWyze

Who won 'American Idol' tonight? After 17 weeks of 'Idol' performances, Lee DeWyze captured the 'American Idol' crown in the season 9 finale over Crystal Bowersox.

Some fans may be mystified that DeWyze took the crown as the next 'Idol,' especially after his performances Tuesday night, where he often sang out of tune, looked uncomfortable onstage and mustered only a negligible amount of energy. Bowersox, on the other hand, did everything right and sounded terrific. And yet, DeWyze garnered the popular vote and emerged victorious.

First up in the two-hour finale, which also happened to be Simon Cowell's last: The Top 12 returned to the stage for a group performance of 'School's Out,' with the legendary Alice Cooper emerging from backstage to finish off the song. Cooper, who was as scary-looking as ever, sounded markedly guttural.

The reigning 'Idol,' Kris Allen, sang his single 'The Truth' next. Although the beginning of his song was marred by chatter from Ryan Seacrest's open microphone, and Allen's voice cracked at one point, his performance was effortless and made us pine for the contestants from last season.

A jokey tribute to Cowell followed, then Aaron Kelly and Siobhan Magnus sang a few bars of 'How Deep is Your Love' by the Bee Gees before being joined onstage by Robin and Barry Gibb. In the end, the song became a study in who could sound more nasal -- Magnus or the surviving Bee Gees.

Afterward, Michael Lynche hit the stage for a duet with Michael McDonald of 'Takin' It to the Streets' by the Doobie Brothers. Comedian Dane Cook then rattled through an unfunny song cobbled together using past insults from Cowell. A gaggle of 'Idol' rejects bum-rushed the stage at the end of Cook's song and quickly derailed the number, causing the camera to cut away in embarrassment.

After the women of the Top 12 sang 'Beautiful' and 'Fighter' by Christina Aguilera, Aguilera herself came onstage and sang 'You Lost Me.' A performance of Hall & Oates' 'I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)' and 'Maneater' by the guys of the Top 12 segued into, predictably, Hall & Oates themselves singing 'You Make My Dreams Come True.'

Bowersox took the stage next, singing 'Ironic' by Alanis Morissette, who then joined her in a duet of 'You Oughta Know.' If this doesn't qualify as another reason why Bowersox should have won, we don't know what does.

'Idol' winner and country phenom Carrie Underwood sang her single 'Undo It,' a song co-written by Kara DioGuardi. After that, Casey James sang Poison's 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn' and was joined by Bret Michaels who sounded good and looked well, despite his recent aneurysm and warning stroke.

American Idol winner: Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox and Joe Cocker sing ‘With a Little Help from my Friends’

The American Idol winner is Lee DeWyze and before the results were read an incredible performance was given when Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox and Joe Cocker sang ‘With a Little Help from my Friends.’ There’s no doubt that some would say it sounded as if Janis Joplin was in the room!

Tonight had many guest performances including a surprise appearance by Bret Michaels, Paula Abdul, all of the Idol winners (except for David Cook), past season contestants, Janet Jackson, Alice Cooper, Alanis Morissette, Michael McDonald, Hall and Oates, Chicago, the Bee Gees, Cristina Aquilera and more.

You may watch the video of American Idol winner Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox and Joe Cocker singing in the video player below.

As far as American Idol finales go, this one was pretty good. It didn’t have the same type of showy feel that other finales have, but since it was a farewell to Simon Cowell, it was a fitting tribute. Lee DeWyze may have been the most emotional American Idol winner the show has ever had as well.

Crystal Bowersox forced Simon to end the night saying something nice after her powerful “Up To the Mountain.” While the momentum was shifting to Lee DeWyze as the finale neared, Crystal put up a strong fight. She even thanked Simon before his last critique, which may have been calculated for votes but probably heartfelt.

I am rooting for Crystal, who I have always liked more from the start. However, Dial Idol, currently, has Lee far far ahead of Crystal and since that is only based on calls, I doubt she’ll be able to close the gap with texts.

'American Idol': David Archuleta picks Season 9 winner -- Team Crystal or Team Lee?

"American Idol's" Season 9 finale showdown between Crystal Bowersox and Lee Dewyze is here! The usual suspects around the blogosphere are making their predictions and placing their bets about who will snag this year's crown. But who better to share first-hand experience of the finale then "American Idol" Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta.

Zap2it sat down with Archie and former Idol contenders Kimberly Caldwell and LaKisha Jones at the AT&T U-verse Lounge in the W Hollywood. And we sure did have a great afternoon kicking it at the hotel with this "American Idol" trio.

In the first installment of our Archuleta sit-down, we pick his brain on how he thinks Bowersox and Dewyze are feeling right at this moment -- or shall we say the "Idol" moment. Because to borrow from "Idol" Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks, this is Crystal and Lee's now.

When asked to enlighten us about the excitement, anticipation and anxiety surrounding Mamasox and Lee, Archuleta describes the period of time as a "crazy rollercoaster of emotions."

"There's so much going on. There's so much attention on them. It's so insane... But at the same time so exciting," Archuleta explains. "It's a real thrill because it's like you're so close to that finish line. It's just that final sprint."

But obviously one of the million dollar "Idol" questions of the moment -- along with who will replace Simon Cowell -- is who will win Season 9?

"I think people just really feel a connection with Lee that is really honest and open. And he's just such a great guy. I think people want to see him win. I would totally be happy with him winning," says Archuleta. "I mean, I think Crystal is super talented too. She's had some really powerful nights. She's never been like the worst or anything like that. She's always had a constant strength and endurance just to her as an artist... But I just feel like Lee -- you know thinking as an American Idol, as a person and example for people -- it would just seem right for him to be that."

So "Idol" aficionados there you have it: David Archuleta picks Team Lee Dewyze to prevail as Season 9's winner. If David's prediction is correct, then Mamasox coincidentally finds herself in great "American Idol" runner-up company along with he, Adam Lambert and Katharine McPhee.

'American Idol': Will Young's 'Leave Right Now' Season 9 tribute

Bookmark and Share

On the final "American Idol" Season 9 performance show on May 25, Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox gave it their all one last time in the hopes of earning America's votes, but they weren't the only singers to take the stage.

Will Young performed the Season 9 song "Leave Right Now," which has been featured in a montage video for the eliminated contestant each week.

In 2002 Young became the first winner of the British "Pop Idol," which was created by Simon Fuller and went on to inspire "American Idol" and many similar spin-offs. His song "Leave Right Now" is a popular UK single from his 2003 album, "Friday's Child."

Because the song has been featured on "American Idol" this season, it's found its way to the American Billboard charts, rising to the #29 position on the Adult Contemporary chart. It's been the soundtrack to many tearful goodbyes throughout Season 9, so it's only fitting that Young would perform the song during a sentimental montage on the penultimate episode of the season.

"Leave Right Now" was released for sale in the U.S. today (May 25). It is Young's first U.S. single.

‘American Idol’ top 2 performance show recap, polls
The season nine finale dispensed with the fluff. With only six songs to fit in one hour, the producers let the final two sing longer versions, and the judges didn’t talk as long. A recap video with Will Young singing filled the final couple of minutes.

More notably, this was the final night for Simon Cowell to critique anything.

Bottom line: Like Kris Allen last year, Lee is more mainstream, more broadly appealing. Expect him to take home the crown tomorrow night.

My rankings of the songs, though I don’t think anybody did a cruddy job. 1. Crystal’s “Up To the Mountain” 2. Crystal’s “Me and Bobby McGhee” 3. Lee’s “The Boxer” 4. Crystal’s “Black Velvet” 5. Lee’s “Beautiful Day” 6. Lee’s “Everybody Hurts”

“I’m beside myself,” Crystal said. “I’m entirely grateful for my family and my life and my son. I’m ready for anything.”

“I will be doing this for the rest of my life,” Lee said, regardless of what happens from here on in.

Favorite song they’ve sung before

First up: Lee (”The Boxer” Simon & Garfunkel) – He does a very pretty version of this song but it doesn’t have any real peak emotional points.
Randy: “Pick it up. Get more energy going.”
Ellen: “I couldn’t be prouder if I birthed you myself. I think you did it better than the first time.
Kara: “You got to punch harder. A meaningful song. I’m glad you were connected to it.”
Simon: “I would expect a lot more passion, excitement. That was a kiss on the cheek when I want a kiss on the lips.”
Second up: Crystal (”Me and Bobby McGee” Janis Joplin) – The whole Janis Joplin comparison doesn’t necessarily mean she has to sing this song again. But here she is. It’s a solid cover version, with a strong ending, but I can’t say she transcends the original.
Randy: “It started a little slow but you picked it up. At the end, it’s the Crystal we’ve grown to know and love.”
Ellen: “You just are so compelling on stage. You and that guitar filling up the entire room. Stunning.”
Kara: “You have fire in your belly tonight.”
Simon: “This brought us back to the time when we absolutely fell in love with you. The past three or four weeks have not been great. We have a competition tonight. That was terrific.”

Round 1: Crystal

Simon Fuller’s pick

Third up: Lee (”Everybody Hurts” R.E.M.) – It worked at moments but I’m not sure he connected all the time with the crowd. And he definitely through a few wonky notes in there.
Randy: “It was a lot better”
Ellen: “I felt you went off a couple of times but I didn’t care. A couple of times you really got into it. then you pulled back again.”
Kara: “You’re emotionally accessible.”
Simon: “Brilliant choice of song for you. I think what I”m feeling tonight is you’re nervous. You have another song to come. You have to really understand what this night can do to change your life.”

Fourth up: Crystal (”Black Velvet” Alannah Myles) – I preferred the original. She sings it with an odd buoyancy and her final “big” note is a bit rough.
Randy: Mama Sox is in it to win it. That was hot!
Ellen: Wardrobes are like Cher changes. That was fantastic.
Kara: Tonight is the night to give it your all. That’s what you were doing.
Simon: I’m almost allergic to that song I’ve heard it so many times in auditions where they’ve murdered it. You took that song and you absolutely nailed it.

Round #2: a draw

Song they sing if they win

Fifth up: Lee (”Beautiful Day” U2) – He doesn’t try to over sing it to match Bono’s powerful pipes during the chorus. Smart move. But he lacks the capability to bring the majesty of Bono’s performance. It’s merely good. I still wish he would show a bit more life on stage. But at least he is trying to hold a note or two.
Randy: When you hit the high notes, you started getting the groove.
Ellen: I was watching your eyes and you were fully present in the song, taking in these people’s energy.
Kara: You got swallowed up in that song. You had good moments and not so good moments. You’ve grown the most.
Simon: You made the most of it. This is the final time I’m going to judge this show. This is what the show is designed for. Someone who needs a break… you’ve worked hard, you’ve remained a really really nice person throughout and I genuinely wish the best for you.

Pimp spot: Crystal (”Up to the Mountain” Patti Griffin) – She starts on a stool and sounds amazing. She brings her entire soul into the song and pulls it off. Is it commercial? No way we’d here that with Ke$ha. But that’s just fine.
Randy: An amazing song by an amazing singer. I’m so proud of you. One of your best moments at the perfect time.
Ellen: You’re always looking for someone unique. I can’t compare you to any current artists. You’re in a league on your own.
Kara: This was a very important song for you. If I have one criticism, I haven’t seen what’s going on inside of you. All I can see is you. You really blossomed just with that song.
Simon (his final critique ever!) – Crystal thanks him. Very classy! I thought that was by far the best performance and song of the night. This will be the final critique I’m ever going to give. That was outstanding.
