High school students and their parents are invited to a free SAT test prep seminar from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Fountain Hills Community Center, 13001 N. La Montana Drive, Fountain Hills.
Fountain Hills resident Alex Fryer, 20, a 2008 graduate of Fountain Hills High School and a junior at Stanford University, will lead the program.

"It's an informal session to let people pick up materials and learn about the classes I teach," said Fryer, who leads several summer classes in Scottsdale and Fountain Hills and teaches online classes during the school year. Free SAT practice tests and preparation booklets will be available for participants to take home, he added.
The seminar is sponsored by Ivy Insiders, a test-prep company whose philosophy differs from competitors in several ways, Fryer said.
"Our formula is to have classes taught by students currently at Ivy League schools and Stanford," he said. "The thought process behind that is we've gone through the process of putting in the effort to get good scores, so we're more familiar with the types of questions that will be on it."
The courses focus on game theory and learning different ways to approach test questions, he added. "We approach the SAT as something you can master and beat."
Fryer said he hopes many students will show up to take advantage of the free seminar instead of sending their parents as proxies. "It's great if I can attract parents because ultimately they are probably the ones signing the kids up, but I want to get kids motivated about the class. It's supposed to be a classroom environment, but it's not about sitting for three hours and having a teacher tell you something from a test prep book. It's me communicating strategies that have worked for me."
At Stanford, Fryer studies computer science and economics and is active in several student groups, according to the Ivy Insiders website. He graduated first in his class from Fountain Hills High School with high scores on both the SAT and ACT.
